Air Duct Cleaning in Antioch, CA and Contra Costa County

Duct cleaning when it helps, and a straight answer

Duct cleaning makes sense in some homes and wastes money in others. It helps after a remodel fills the ducts with drywall dust, after rodents have nested in a run, when debris shows at the registers, or before a new system goes onto old ducts. It rarely helps when the only complaint is ordinary household dust. We look inside your ducts first, show you what is there, and tell you plainly whether cleaning, repair or replacement is the better use of your money.

Why choose Blue Star

We're an HVAC contractor, not a cleaning crew selling duct work as an add-on. That matters because a lot of 'dirty duct' problems are really leaks, torn flex duct or a return pulling in attic air, and cleaning won't fix any of those. Blue Star has worked on duct systems across Contra Costa since 2006 under CSLB license #880647. If cleaning is worth doing, we clean the supply and return runs, the registers and the blower compartment, and reseal our access points. If it isn't, we say so.

  • Inspection before any cleaning
  • Supply and return runs
  • Registers and grilles
  • Blower compartment cleaned
  • Leaks and tears noted
  • Filter fit checked

Where we work

Inland East County is dusty. Afternoon Delta winds and dry-season farm debris around Oakley, Brentwood, Byron and Knightsen load filters and coils faster than in town, and East County grass fires sometimes send smoke into Antioch and Pittsburg neighborhoods. In older homes in north Antioch, Concord and Pleasant Hill, the bigger issue is usually decades-old ducts with gaps that pull in attic or crawlspace dust. Remodels in Walnut Creek and Lafayette homes from the 1960s and 70s leave drywall dust behind too.

Colton was great. He found the problem right away and did a temporary fix to get my a/c running until he could get the right part ordered. He also made sure every inside was working well.

Questions we hear

Do air ducts need to be cleaned on a regular schedule?

Usually not. The EPA's guidance is that duct cleaning hasn't been shown to prevent health problems and isn't needed routinely. It does make sense in specific cases: rodent or insect contamination, visible mold, heavy debris after construction, or ducts that blow dust even with a good filter. For most homes, a filter that fits properly and gets changed on time does more than cleaning.

Is duct cleaning a scam?

The service itself isn't, but some offers are. Watch for a rock-bottom advertised price that grows once the crew is inside, promises that cleaning will cure allergies, and pressure to add chemical sanitizers you didn't ask for. A real cleaning puts strong suction on the whole system, not just the registers. We give a written quote after looking at the ducts, and we'll tell you if cleaning isn't worth it.

Should I clean my ducts or replace them?

If your ducts are flex duct that is 20 or more years old, torn, flattened or pulling apart at the joints, cleaning them doesn't make much sense. Many East County homes built in the 1990s and 2000s are reaching that point. Sheet metal ducts in good shape can be cleaned and sealed. When we inspect, we'll tell you which category your system falls into and quote the option that fits.

Will duct cleaning help after wildfire smoke?

It can help after a heavy smoke event if soot and ash were pulled into the return side, but filtration is the better defense. A MERV 13 filter in a properly sized cabinet, a sealed return and running the fan on smoke days do more than cleaning afterward. If smoke left an odor that won't clear, we can check the ducts and blower and tell you what's causing it.

How should I prepare for a duct cleaning visit?

Clear a path to the furnace or air handler, the return grilles and the attic hatch, and let us know about pets and anyone in the house with breathing problems. If you've had rodents, tell us so we can check for damage, since chewed flex duct needs repair or replacement, not just cleaning. Plan on the heating and cooling being off while we work.
