Smart Thermostats and HVAC Zoning in Antioch, CA and Contra Costa

Smart thermostats and zoning for a hot upstairs

In a two-story East County home, it's common for the upstairs to sit at 82 while the downstairs thermostat reads 74. One thermostat can only measure one spot. Zoning splits the house into areas with their own thermostats and uses motorized dampers in the ducts to send air where it's needed. A smart thermostat alone won't fix that, but it does make it easier to schedule around PG&E time-of-use rates and to check on the house from your phone.

Why choose Blue Star

A thermostat looks like a simple swap, and sometimes it is. But many problems we see come from a smart thermostat wired wrong for a heat pump, a missing common wire, or settings that fight the equipment. We match the thermostat to your system, including heat pumps and multi-stage equipment, and set it up before we leave. For zoning, we confirm your ducts and blower can handle it first. Our new-construction work under CSLB #880647 already includes multi-zone systems with electronic dampers and phone control.

  • Thermostat matched to system
  • Heat pump wiring verified
  • Schedules set before we leave
  • Motorized zone dampers
  • Duct pressure checked
  • Phone app set up with you

Where we work

East County's newer neighborhoods, from Southeast Antioch's Lone Tree and Deer Valley areas to Brentwood, Oakley and Pittsburg's San Marco hills, are full of two-story homes where heat rises and the only thermostat sits in a downstairs hallway. With July highs averaging in the 90s, those upstairs bedrooms suffer. Homes in Concord, Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek date mostly to the early 1970s, so older thermostat wiring and older ducts are part of the picture there.

Colton was great. He found the problem right away and did a temporary fix to get my a/c running until he could get the right part ordered. He also made sure every inside was working well.

Questions we hear

Will a smart thermostat fix my hot upstairs?

Usually not by itself. A thermostat only reads the temperature where it hangs. Some models use remote room sensors to average temperatures or favor one room, which helps a little, but the air still goes wherever the ducts send it. Real fixes for a hot upstairs are zoning, duct repairs or resizing, or a separate system such as a ductless unit for the second floor.

Can any house be zoned?

Most homes with central ducted systems can be zoned, but not all should be. The ducts need a layout that lets each zone be separated, and the system needs a way to handle the extra pressure when only one zone is calling, such as a variable-speed blower or a properly sized bypass. A single-stage system on undersized ducts can get noisy and hard on equipment when zoned, so we check before quoting.

Do smart thermostats work with heat pumps?

Yes, but they have to be set up for one. Heat pumps use a reversing valve and often have backup electric heat, and a thermostat configured for a gas furnace and AC can run that backup heat far too often, which drives up the bill. We wire and configure the thermostat for your exact equipment, including dual-fuel systems that pair a heat pump with a gas furnace.

Can I schedule around PG&E time-of-use rates?

Yes. Many PG&E residential customers are on time-of-use plans with higher prices in the late afternoon and evening. A smart thermostat can pre-cool the house earlier in the afternoon and coast through the peak. In East County heat, that works best when the house is well insulated and the ducts don't leak, so the cool air you paid less for stays inside.

Will you install a thermostat I bought myself?

In many cases, yes. We check that the model works with your system before installing it, and if it doesn't, we explain why. Some older systems have no common wire to power a smart thermostat, which we can usually add. If the thermostat you bought won't work with your equipment, we'd rather tell you up front than leave you with a system that short-cycles.
